“shot me out of the sky, YOU’RE MY KRYPTONITE, you keep making me weak, yeah frozen and can’t breathe.” ~ One Direction – One Thing

Standard

It is that time of the week again.  Yes it is song of the week.

Now this band are guilty pleasure of mine. Rising from their fame from the reality TV show, The X Factor, and have now become the biggest boyband in the world despite them only being formed at the judges’ houses.

Only coming third in the competition, it’s a surprise to see how far they have come from their beginnings as schoolboys wanting to pursue a career as a solo artist.

This week’s song of the week is: One DirectionOne Thing.

The band comprises of Harry Styles from Holmes Chapel, Cheshire; Niall Horan from County Westmeath, Ireland; Zayn Malik from Bradford, Louis Tomlinson from Doncaster and Liam Payne from Wolverhampton and they are aged between 18 and 20 years old.

It is hard to imagine that three years ago, these guys were not in a band together and didn’t even know each other. Now they are one of the biggest successes to come out of the UK version of The X Factor.

In 2010, the five boys auditioned as solo candidates for the programme but didn’t qualify into the “boys” category. Normally if you are gone at this stage, there is no turning back and you slowly get forgotten by the public who may have seen you in the first lot of audtions.

However, their story as everyone knows is different. Thanks to the suggestion of guest judge, Nicole Scherzinger, the five of them were put together as a band and got through into the “groups” category.

After coming third in the competion, getting beaten by Rebecca Ferguson and the eventual winner Matt Cardle, they signed a two million pound record deal with Syco Music, owned by the creator of the show, Simon Cowell.

Since then they released their debut album, Up All Nightwhich had writers contributing including Kelly Clarkson, Ed Sheeran, Toby Gad and Steve Mac and producers including RedOne, Carl Falk, Steve Robson and Shep Solomon!

So it is no wonder that this album has not only been successful in the UK but all over the world, with it reaching the top 10 in TWENTY COUNTRIES!

In America, their album debuted at number 1, making them the first UK group in history to debut at number one with their first album in the Billboard 200.

They have also won a Brit Award for Best British Single in 2012 for What Makes You Beautiful; they have been signed in America to Columbia Records; have performed on Saturday Night Live; have sold out all their dates on their debut headlining tour and are going on a WORLD tour in 2013!

One Thing is the third single to be released from Up All Night and was released in January 2012. With it peaking at number 9, this makes it the group’s 3rd consecutive Top 10 hit! Not bad for newbies to the business!

The song was written by Rami Yacoub, Carl Falk and Savan Kotecha; Yacoub and Kotecha have written together before for the Irish boyband Westlife including the Top 10 hit Us Against The World and for Season 2 winner of The X Factor Shayne Ward.

Yacoub and Falk have also written together for people including UK bands The Wanted and The Saturdays, Nicole Scherzinger, Taio Cruz and Nicki Minaj.

The three of them together writing a song would literally be like striking gold for a record label/group/solo artist and lucky for One Direction, their manager Simon Cowell knows how to get the best songwriters around for his artists.

The song is one of those that you just want to dance around to and has a similar up-tempo feel to their more up-tempo numbers on the album.

A common theme of the album is (of course!) about love…and this song is about a guy who can’t get a girl out of his mind, who he doesn’t even know and wants to be with her; he can’t explain why he does but she has something that he has been looking for:

Something’s gotta give now,

Cos I’m dying just to know your name,

And I need you here with me now,

Cos you’ve got that one thing.

Even if you aren’t a One Direction fan, I’m sure that when listening to the lyrics, you secretly want someone that you like to tell you what the boys sing in this song.

The song literally just makes me happy listening to it and I’m going to admit that, at first, I dismissed them and thought aren’t going to be successful and are just going to fade away,  like quite a few acts from these reality TV shows have.

But I have been proved wrong. VERY wrong and have had to eat my words. They have contributed to writing some of the songs on the album, they have really good voices and they have the “boyband” package is essential to success.

I’m off to see them when they come to Newcastle next year and to say that I’m excited is a bit of an understatement. Love them or hate them, they have been a major success story which I’m sure Simon Cowell will be boasting about for years to come.

Stay inspired x

  1. I not to mention my guys ended up following the nice things on the website then then I got an awful feeling I never thanked the website owner for those tips. All the young men came absolutely excited to read all of them and have now in fact been using these things. Many thanks for indeed being indeed helpful and for choosing some fabulous ideas millions of individuals are really eager to learn about. Our honest regret for not expressing gratitude to you sooner.
